Guyana, the only English speaking country on the South American continent, has an area equivalent to the size of Great Britain and a population of only 750,000 from a wide variety of ethnic backgrounds.
In 1996 there were 14 conferences however a review of the work being carried found a number that were not really functioning as they should and the number dropped to 8, all of which were fully active. Under the presidency of Bro Winston Playter this number increased to 26, many of the new ones being in Region 1, but with the Society now having a presence in 8 of Guyana’s 10 geographic regions.
The small projects developed over recent years are all designed to raise funds to enable the conferences to purchase food for those in especial need in their communities. These are all working well and, perhaps, the need for the members to have hands on involvement in the work of the projects is engendering a strengthening in the conferences as they members are all regularly working together as a team
The team that have worked with Bro Winston Playter over the past six years are to be congratulated for the growth and development of the Society they have achieved. Sr Felicia Browne has now taken over the Presidency. Our hope is to be able to grow and develop our support for the Society in Guyana in their most valuable work that is actively addressing the needs of those in distress in their communities.
